On location: Clinton Raceway

Clinton Raceway, a Standardbred harness racing track, sits at 129 Beech Street, next to Gateway Casinos Clinton at 147 Beech Street. Clinton Raceway Inc. owns and operates it as its own business; Gateway has no part in running it. Questions about the racing go to 519-482-5270 or clintonraceway.com. Don't mix that number up with the casino's, because each business handles different matters.

Work on a new grandstand began in the fall of 2024. The result is a modern grandstand for 400 people. If children come along, a playground and a skatepark sit close to the track.

Running order: race Sundays

Live harness racing at Clinton Raceway runs on Sunday afternoons from May to September. The track, run by Clinton Raceway Inc., publishes each season's race dates and post times on clintonraceway.com. This guide does not repeat them.

Before you drive in, open the card there and check the dates and post times for your Sunday. The casino next door cannot confirm a race card, since it does not run the track. If anything is unclear, the track answers at 519-482-5270.

  • The planner treats any Sunday from May to September as the racing window, not as a confirmed race day.
  • Before the drive, check the race card on clintonraceway.com, where Clinton Raceway Inc. posts its dates and post times.

Segment two: after the last race

After the final race at Clinton Raceway, the slots next door keep going: Gateway Casinos Clinton runs them 9 AM to 1 AM on all seven days. Its floor carries 141 slot machines, reel-style and video, across every denomination. Getaway Express, the licensed food counter, offers light meals, savoury snacks and drinks until 7 PM. The counter shuts well ahead of the slots, so supper is best planned around it. Before a holiday Sunday, the front desk at 519-482-7540 can confirm the hours.

One rule matters for race fans: the casino takes no bets on races. Race wagering goes through Clinton Raceway, at the track on race days and at its off-site simulcast. Parking on the casino lot is free.

Archive footage: wagering since 1970

Pari-mutuel betting arrived at Clinton Raceway in 1970, introduced by the Clinton Kinsmen and Kinette Club, so race wagering there dates from that year. The slot room next door follows a different arrangement. In May 2017, Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Limited took over the slots at Clinton Raceway as part of OLG's Southwest Gaming Bundle, on a 20-year operating agreement. Across Ontario, the conduct and management of casino gaming rest with OLG, private firms run the buildings, and the AGCO oversees those firms. The track itself stays with Clinton Raceway Inc.

Questions from the booth

Which day of the week are the live races?
Live harness racing runs on Sunday afternoons from May to September. Clinton Raceway Inc. posts each season's dates and post times on clintonraceway.com, so check there before you set out.
Is the grandstand at the track new?
The grandstand is recent: work on it began in the fall of 2024. The result is a modern grandstand for 400 people.

A visit works as long as the right documents are in hand. Anyone 21 or younger is also asked by door staff for a second card or document that bears their name.
Can a race bet be placed at the casino cashier?
Gateway Casinos Clinton accepts no race bets anywhere in the building. Wagering is handled by Clinton Raceway Inc., either at the track on race days or at the simulcast on Huron Fish and Game Club's premises, 278 Alma Grove.
